Gaston County, NC – On Sunday, March 22, N.C. Cooperative Extension, Gaston County center, in partnership with the Gaston Public Health Department, successfully launched the inaugural Donation Station at the Belmont Farmer’s Market.

This innovative program leverages the generosity of local shoppers to address food insecurity while simultaneously supporting the regional agricultural economy. During the launch event, 77 participants engaged with the program, resulting in $85 worth of fresh, local produce donated directly to neighbors in need. Watch the ringing of the Opening Bell.

How the Donation Station Works

The Donation Station is a North Carolina Cooperative Extension program delivered by Extension Master Food Volunteers and partially funded by Steps to Health. The initiative creates a sustainable cycle of support:

• Supporting Farmers: Shoppers purchase fresh items (produce, eggs, cheese) at market value from local vendors.
• Direct Impact: These items are donated at the station and delivered immediately to a partner food pantry.
• Monetary Contributions: Cash donations are used by food pantries to purchase specific high-need items directly from farmers at the market.

This model ensures local producers receive fair compensation while providing vulnerable families with nutrient-dense, fresh food options.

Enhancing Community Health

The inaugural event benefited the New Life Baptist Church of Belmont’s Food Pantry, which serves more than 200 families monthly. By providing access to fresh fruit, leafy greens, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, and proteins, the program supports both the Extension Family and Consumer Science Program and the Gaston Public Health Department’s mission to improve dietary outcomes and long-term health for all Gaston County residents.

Volunteer Opportunities: Training Now Available

The Donation Station will rotate throughout the season between the Belmont, Gastonia, and Mount Holly Farmer’s Markets. To maximize the reach of this program, Gaston Cooperative Extension is seeking additional volunteers to be trained as station operators.

Requirements for Volunteers:

• Participation in a brief training session.
• Availability to staff stations at local weekend markets.
• A commitment to supporting local agriculture and public health.
