Interested in becoming part of a volunteer program that is dedicated to promoting research-based, sustainable gardening? Since 1979, the NC State Extension Master Gardener℠ program has recruited, trained, and engaged people to serve as volunteer educators. Gaston County has been involved for over 30 years! Now there are over 3,500 volunteers in 83 counties across the state.
Gaston County will offer its next EMG Volunteer course, beginning February 21, 2022 (ending May 6, 2022). The hybrid course utilizes the award-winning Extension Gardener Handbook. Students will complete assignments online, while enjoying hands-on practical classes, in person, on Thursdays from 4:30–6:30 p.m. Course fee is $125 and must be received by February 11.
The first step to becoming a 2022 student is by submitting the application: 2022-GCMGV Application-fillable Upon completion, save and email to: julie_flowers@ncsu.edu Students will be interviewed and selected for the course by the County Extension agent. Class is limited to 25 persons. Once accepted into the course and payment received, students will be given access to the online platform.
Upon completion of the course, Interns begin obtaining the required 40 Volunteer hours for year one. Subsequent year required minimums are 20 Volunteer Hours and 10 Continuing Education Hours. Details will be discussed during orientation.
