2 Year Fertilizer Variety Trial Field Day — July 23, 2024, 6:30–8:00 PM, Mt. Holly NC

Improving Forages & Maximizing Results
Tuesday, July 23rd, 2024
6:30 PM to 8:00 PM
1262 Stanley Lucia Rd, Mt. Holly, NC

TOPICS COVERED:
  • Addressing forage fertility
  • Forage yields/tonnage
  • Forage nutrient content
  • Fertilizer cost benefit analysis
The practical question being investigated with this 2-yar trial was whether producers could use different nitrogen & fertilizer rates to increase forage tonnage and profit margins.

The premise for this trial was in part due to the Spring of 2022 presenting challenges for livestock and hay producers with exorbitantly high fertilizer prices. Although fertilizer prices have continued to come down from where they were this time two years ago, they are not likely to return to the price range that they once where before Spring 2022. This has resulted in many farmers calling the Extension office looking for advice on the   best approach for their field fertility issues. Therefore, in an effort to substantiate the advice we were giving out, the Commercial Horticulture Agent and Livestock Agent partnered with a local hay producer, who provided us with an almost 2 acre hay field,  to conduct a 2-year fertility and forage yield trial.

We plan to share the results of this 2-year trial at our July field day.

This field day will be held in conjunction with the Gaston County Cattlemen's quarterly meeting.
