Speedway to Healthy is coming to Gaston County and we are calling volunteers to the track!
On Monday, December 8, 2025, Gaston Cooperative Extension will host a large interactive health exhibit for 300 third grade students. Students will visit the exhibit over a three day period. This will be the first time this exhibit has been hosted in the county. This 1,200 square foot structure representing the human body is provided through the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at North Carolina A&T State University and requires 20-30 trained volunteers each day.
Students race through the exhibit in groups of 8 to 10. The exhibit is comprised of 11 pit stops. The pit-stops are the 1) Starting line, 2) Brain, 3) Mouth, 4) Stomach, 5) Small Intestine, 6) Heart, 7) Lungs, 8) Kidneys, 9) Bones, 10) Muscles, 11) Skin.
Students are given a food sticker at the starting line and learn about the My Plate model. After the starting line session, the children (as pieces of food) proceed to the brain, which is the second pit stop on the Speedway to Healthy. At each pitstop they learn how the body functions and what they can do to keep healthy. Volunteers in each pit stop deliver scripted information and/or lead students through an activity specific to the pit stop.
Volunteers are needed for the following roles:
Set Up: Takes 4-6 hours and is scheduled for Monday, December 8, 2025 beginning at 10:00 a.m.
