A professional image of a woman in front of foliage.Beginning March 1, 2024, Gaston County welcomes its new County Extension Director, Jonette Mungo. Prior to working for Virginia Cooperative Extension, Jonette was a secondary classroom teacher of 15 years in Virginia. She has experience in teaching Middle and High School, English, Theatre and T.V. Production, Speech Communication, and Intro to Humanities. Having received her undergrad degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Theatre Education, Jonette made great gains during COVID by pivoting to video production and using social media to reach statewide and national audiences with extension programs.

She has a passion for learning and creating. Her graduate degree from Virginia Tech in Natural Resources is passionately focused on equitable access to clean and safe water as well as the conservation of nature and its resources. Jonette’s goals are to grow diverse Extension programs, reach new audiences, and establish relevant, sustainable Extension programs that directly address the needs and interests of the community.

She is an avid tent camper who chases dark skies and nature trails. Jonette finds peace in homesteading and watching her chickens chase lightening bugs. She loves summer concerts, hot air balloon festivals, and laughing often. Jonette is happy to be part of the Gaston County community.
